Launched in Rhode Island in 1995, X Games have quickly become THE reference in terms of extreme sports. The principle? To bring together the best of alternative practices, such as skateboarding, mountain bike or rollerblading in summer, and snowboarding, slopestyle or snowmobile in winter, for top-level competitions. They are dozens of thousands of fans to gather around every year on the event spots to witness an always more spectacular show, and hundreds of thousands of viewers to follow their favourite athletes live all over the world!
Last March, Winter X Games landed in Tignes for the very first edition of the Winter X games Europe. "Huge", "spectacular", "never seen before in Europe": everybody agreed, it was a real success!
Don't miss the third edition of the Winter X Games Europe Tignes from March 14th to 16th!
Remember...
Summer 1995: ESPN launched the first X Games, called then "Extreme Games", featuring skateboarding, bungee jumping, rollerblading, MTB, sky surfing and street sledging. This revolution in a country used to its holy trilogy "baseball-basketball-football" caused some sarcasm, but the gap between the Old School and the youth is huge, the last ones putting a lot of themselves in alternative practices such as snowboarding. The first edition proved them right: it gathered 200 000 spectators in Rhode Island, seduiced by this outstanding show held in an arena like gladiator games.
1997: the brand "X Games" is so successful that the event becomes annual and the first-ever Winter X Games are announced at a press conference in 1996. Snow Summit Mountain Resort in Big Bear Lake, Calif., hosted competitions in snowboarding, ice climbing, snow mountain bike racing, super-modified shovel racing and a crossover multi-sport event. The inaugural Winter X Games are televised to 198 countries and territories in 21 different languages. This is the first year that ABC Sports broadcasts an X Games event. More than 38,000 spectators make the trek to Big Bear Lake for four days of competition.
2002: first edition of the Winter X Games Europe in Aspen, Colorado. Two new skiing disciplines are added: Ski Slopestyle and Ski SuperPipe.
Since 2002: Winter X Games take place every year in Aspen. New competitions are added every year, the last ones being Ski Slopestyle for women and Snowmobile Next Trick in 2009.
2010: first edition of the Winter x Games Tignes.
2011: second edition of the Winter X Games Tignes.
2011: third edition of the Winter X Games Tignes. 103.600 people in three days, and 41.500 people the day of the men's SuperPipe final with Shaun White!
